Final Fantasy Card Game Chocobo’s Crystal Hunt Coming This Fall

By Cody MaynardAugust 4, 2016

Coming this October, Final Fantasy lovers will be able to get their hands on what is possibly the most adorable card game on the horizon, Chocobo’s Crystal Hunt. Not much has been released as far as rules go, but according to a recent blog post by Square Enix, players will be using chocobos to steal each other’s crystals. The game will only run you $19.99. Sounds fun, and if I can’t have Triple Triad in physical form, then I guess this will have to do.

The box comes with 43 cards, and will be a standalone game, meaning that you can play it straight out of the box without worrying about spending extra money building decks. Also included are 5 Player Markers and 5 Victory Tokens, but no images were provided of those. Here’s a breakdown of the included cards:

• Hunt cards: Chocobo × 14 / Fat Chocobo × 5
• Crystal Cards: Fire Crystal × 4 / Water Crystal × 4 / Wind Crystal × 4 / Earth Crystal × 4
• Monster cards: Bomb × 4 / Ahriman × 4

Square Enix says that Chocobo’s Crystal Hunt will take around 10-20 minutes for an average game and is for 3-5 players, but they’re recommending 4. That’s likely because of the number of cards included–with only so many Crystal Cards, everyone’s stash would probably be skimpier with more players. The game is available for pre-order now, so make sure you get a copy.

I would love to see an expansion down the road, however unlikely that seems, but I’ll pick it up regardless. There’s simply not an abundance of cards, really. It would be nice to see a variety of armored chocobo and some more enemies, even if it’s unclear how to play at this point. Still though, it’s something and it looks like a good game to play with the younger generation of Final Fantasy fans. After watching me play tons of Final Fantasy IVX, my daughter started calling her bike her chocobo, so yeah, we’ll enjoy it.
