It was announced in the 30th issues of Kodansha’s Weekly Shounen Magazine that Ken Akamatsu’s UQ Holder will be receiving a television anime. UQ Holder is the sequel to Akamatsu’s other work Mahou Sensei Negima.
The story of UQ Holder is described as follows:
In the decade since the world became aware of the existence of magic, the world has undergone massive upheaval. However, a boy named Touta lives in seclusion in a rural town far removed from these changes. His ordinary life is highlighted by his magic-using female teacher and his supportive friends. When his tranquil daily life is disrupted, he embarks on a unique adventure.
Several characters from Negima make their return in UQ Holder along with a brand new cast of characters. Much like Akamatsu’s other series, UQ Holder has plenty of loud-mouthed comedy and fan service to go around.
In addition to the announcement about the television anime, the issue also announced that UQ Holder will be switching magazines. It will be moving to Bessatsu Shounen Magazine which is only published once a month. The manga will be taking a break during this transition and will resume once again in the October 9 issue. Some attribute this to Akamatsu’s track record as he is known for taking hiatuses; mainly citing research as his reason for doing so.
The manga launched in August of 2013 and as of the time of this writing has had 11 volumes printed with the 12th volume slated for release on November 17. A limited edition of the 12th volume will bundle a Negima Box that will include a booklet and as-yet unspecified merchandise. Mahou Sensei Negima also received a television anime which ran from January to June in 2006, lasting 26 episodes. Akamatsu’s other work, Love Hina, also received a television anime adaptation running from April to September in 2000 and spanning 24 episodes.
