Earthbound, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Kart Arrive on Virtual Console for New 3DS

By Guest WriterMarch 25, 2016

On the morning of March 24th, three classic SNES titles arrived to the North American Nintendo eShop. Earthbound, Super Mario Kart, and Donkey Kong Country join the rest of the SNES eShop library bringing the virtual console games up to 6 total. These new additions are sure to thrill many nostalgic gamers.

Earthbound offers to take you back to the thrilling tale of Ness as he explores the fictional continent of America and later faces-off with a fearsome foe. Along the way, Ness meets loyal companions, quirky enemies, and many secrets in the land he calls home. This role-playing game is perfect for those who enjoy exploring, making new friendships, and finding out that not everything is as it seems.

Donkey Kong Country takes inspiration from the Mario Bros. platformers. You play as Donkey Kong who is accompanied by his nephew Diddy Kong. Together, the duo must reclaim their stolen bananas from the vile King K. Rule and his Kremling lackeys. Each character brings their own level of expertise with Donkey Kong being the hulking muscle and Diddy Kong being the swift yet clever side-kick. You must work together using a clever mix of wits and brawn to emerge victorious.

Rounding out the list, Super Mario Kart blazes a trail into the world of handheld gaming. This classic kart racer will show you some of the roots of great Mario Kart racing. Players are given the option to choose one of 8 playable characters, and each character brings different kart stats that can be enhanced with in-game item drops. Freedom is in your hands as you choose the best kart racer for your style of play.

Unfortunately, owners of the original 3DS are currently unable to purchase these three games. Earthbound, Donkey Kong Country, and Super Mario Kart are only playable on the New 3DS line of systems. The company of Nintendo had claimed in a recent interview with Game Informer that the console just couldn’t handle the specifications to run the software:

As previously announced, New Nintendo 3DS has an improved CPU, which enables Super NES games to run on the system with quality results,” Game Informer was told by a Nintendo representative. “The Super NES games also include Perfect-Pixel mode, which allows players to see their games in their original TV resolution and aspect resolution.

That’s a real bummer…

If you do happen to already have a New 3DS, feel free to enjoy these new virtual console titles. You can expect to pay $7.99 per game. While there are no discounts for owners of the Wii U editions of these games, we are still holding out hop. Maybe someday Nintendo will later offer a bundle deal similar to the DLC characters and add-ons in Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS.
