As we march onward into the new year, 2016 has been hitting us with some great titles. One of them is volume 3 of The Demon Prince of Momochi House, which is truly a promising series that is living up to my expectations. I repeat what I said in previous reviews, if you like Xxxholic you need to check out this series by Aya Shouoto.

Volume 3 introduces the first real villain of the series, Kasha. He is viewed as so powerful and absolute that Aoi doesn’t even want to mention his name or discuss who he is. After a brief run-in with Kasha, Aoi and the others finally admit Himari’s usefulness both as owner of Momochi House and as a human who can see things they cannot. They decide going forward to take her more seriously and to keep her in the loop on their adventures in the house.

As the Nue, Aoi has a duty to fulfill in the other world that inhabits the space of Momochi House. He decides to bring Himari with him and disguises her as one of his shikigami. He takes her to an ayakashi celebration where he needs to seal away an angry spirit. Through a chain of events at the celebration, the ayakashi discover what Himari really is and decide to throw her into the center of the ceremony to see what role she would play in the Nue’s resealing. When Aoi discovers Himari tied up and forced into the ceremony against her own will, he loses control of his anger and attempts to kill the ayakashi. Can the Nue come back to his senses? You’ll have to read Volume 3 to find out.

Final Word:

I liked this volume very much. For the first time you can see a dramatic change in the relationships of the main characters. Himari has earned her place in Momochi House and has become a respected figure. The ayakashi have accepted her as well; this is evident through background illustrations where the cute little monsters tag along with her, jump on her shoulders, or show affection. They no longer try to attack her or pull pranks on her as they did in the first two volumes.

The relationship between Aoi and Himari is still developing but through events at the ayakashi party it becomes obvious that they love each other. Unfortunately, Aoi is a lot less mature than the Nue and still seems like he can’t express the love he has formed for Himari properly. Likewise, Himari doesn’t seem ready to admit she has feelings for Aoi. I think the end of this volume really paved the way for more development in volume 4. I am looking forward to seeing where their relationship goes.
