Microsoft to finally drop support for older Internet Explorer versions

By Keith MitchellJanuary 6, 2016

A long time in the coming, Microsoft has announced that come January 12, 2016, all support for Internet Explorer versions lower than Internet Explorer 11 will be dropped. That means that there will ber no more patches, no more security updates, nothing. But what does this mean for you? Basically if you’re running Windows and using anything but Internet Explorer 11 or Edge after January 12, 2016, then you’re going to be running a very insecure web browser (insert joke here).

internet explorer

Beginning January 12, 2016, only the current version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system will receive technical support and security updates. Microsoft recommends that customers running older versions of Internet Explorer upgrade to the most recent version, which is Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.

For a complete list of browser/OS combinations supported after January 12, 2016, please see the Microsoft Support Lifecycle FAQ for Internet Explorer.

If you aren’t sure if you’re already running Internet Explorer 11 for your OS, we’ve provided links to download IE11 and install it for Windows 7 and 8.1, Windows 8 users will need to upgrade to Windows 8.1, if you haven’t already that is. Windows 10 users will already be on-board with Internet Explorer 11 / Edge.

Of course, if you’re not a fan of Internet Explorer, there are alterantive’s, like Google’s Chrome, Mozilla’s Firefox, Opera or even a more recent favorite of mine, Torch.
