Star Wars: FA – Black Series Kylo Ren Review

By David KirbyDecember 16, 2015

Kylo Ren is the mysterious villain of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In just over 48 hours, Star Wars fans will finally see just how terrifying he can be. Today we will take a look at the action figure version of Kylo Ren,  #03 of The Force Awakens 6″ Black Series line.

Manufacturer: Hasbro
Release Date: September 4th, 2015
Price: $19.99

Star Wars Kylo Ren Boxed

The back of the package reads:

Kylo Ren

“A dark warrior strong with the Force, Kylo Ren commands First Order missions with a temper as fiery as his unconventional Lightsaber.”

Scale and Articulation

Kylo Ren stands at just over 6″ and is taller than both Rey and Finn, but is shorter than Chewbacca. He is very well articulated, and his sculpt doesn’t hinder his movement. The only thing I would have liked to see is double elbow joints so that he could manage two-handed lightsaber poses.

Sculpt and Paint

Kylo Ren’s sculpt is simple, but screen accurate. His helmet is the standout part of the sculpt and manages to hearken back to classic Star Wars designs while still being original. The waistcoat beneath his cloak is sculpted, as are his boots, sleeves, gloves, and what appears to be either a scarf or part of his cloak. The paint applications are simple. He’s wearing all black, save for silver paint applications on his helmet and belt buckle. This isn’t a problem, though, as the texture of the cloth visually distinguishes him. Additionally, the plastic used on his boots is glossy as opposed to the matte finish the rest of the figure sports.

Accessories

Kylo Ren comes with a single accessory, and to be fair it’s the only thing we’ve seen him hold other than a melted Darth Vader helmet. The blade of his lightsaber is not removable.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Wave 1

Outstanding, and a must-buy for Star Wars fans.

Kylo Ren is simply dressed, yet menacing and screen accurate. Additional elbow articulation would have been nice, but this is otherwise a wonderful figure and a must-own part of your Star Wars: The Force Awakens collection. Perhaps in the future we will see an unmasked variant that sports the likeness of Adam Driver.
