Manga Review: The Demon Prince of Momochi House 1

 Title: The Demon Prince of Momochi House Volume 1

This manga is about an orphan, Himari Momochi, who inherits an estate from her deceased family on her sixteenth birthday. Excited to have something from her relatives, she promptly arrives at Momochi House to discover three vagrant males have taken hold of the ancient house. Intent on making herself at home, Himari moves herself in and attempts to eject the three men from her new home. At the same time, they’re trying to make her leave. Eventually the four settle on living together. As luck would have it, the house is built on the barrier between the human and spiritual realms. Himari was supposed to act as the guardian between these two worlds; however, one of the three handsome squatters has already taken her place.

Since Himari can’t act as the guardian, she ends up in a lot of trouble as she explores the house. It seems that each room could lead into a pitfall of aggravated spirits or traps set up to destroy Himari. Aoi, the squatter who has become the guardian, finds himself following Himari so he could protect her from the monsters lurking in the house. As they spend an increasing amount of time with each other, she learns about his loneliness and how his accidental discovery of Momochi House was also a curse that was intended for her.

Final Word:

To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect from the cover and I was a little apprehensive about reading this. I wasn’t sure if this was going to be a Yaoi or something else. Fortunately the back cover copy does a great job describing the story, which sounds nothing like what I expected based upon the book’s cover. As I dipped further into the manga, I was reminded of XxxHolic, which is a series I really love. This first volume has similar ideas that are familiar to fans of shows about Japanese lore. This series just happens to have a romantic twist on the usual mythic plots about spirits and curses. I am definitely interested in where this is going. Based on the cover design, I entirely understand if male audiences wish to stay way from this Shojo Beat title.
