Today’s the day that we’ll finally get to see what this new Gundam series is a about and from what i see and know so far, I can’t wait for it to air. Entitled, Gundam Mobile Suit Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans, series was created to include strong characters and was thought up by a younger, new generation of creators who wanted to do a different take on the popular Gundam series. Set in a currently unknown universe, the series takes place 300 years after a very large war known as the Calamity War and is centered around two characters; Mikazauki Augus and Orga Itsuka. While not related, the two have a strong bond that has been stated to be stronger than most brothers would have with each other.
Do I sense a brotherly rivarly later on down the road?
The series was penned by Mari Okada, character designs and concepts by Yu Ito and Michinori Chiba, Music by Masaru Yokoyama and directed by Tatsuyui, all of which are well known in the anime commnity.

The name of the Gundam is Gundam Barbatos and what we know about mobile suit is that it’s constantly evolving. Yep, it can and will evolve though the series it seems. On top of that it apparently has been taking lessons from Mega Man and has the ability to utilize the weapons and armor from the various mobile suits that it is able to defeat. But at it’s base form it starts off as an incomplete mobile suit and is actually a unit that was relic from the previous war. That said, expect to see more units like this or similar later on in the series. Oddly enough there was actually already a Gundam with the same name back in Bandai created video game, SD Gundam G Generation. While the two don’t share anything other than the name, I thought it would be good to point out to avoid confusion.
We also know that the pilot of Gundam Barbatos will be Mikazauki Augus, as the announcement does make a short mention of this. So it also seems that the tend of a younger character piloting the main mobile suit in a Gundam series still hasn’t changed, though if there’s one thing I have issues with in a Gundam series, it’s that. C’mon Bandai, I want another Mu Ray Laga or Graham Aker.
From what little I’ve seen from the trailer, it definitely is giving me that MS 08th Team vibe with a touch of MGS: 00, especially with military setting and the designs of the other mobile suits that have been shown. We know it takes places 300 years after a huge war but what we don’t know is what universe this takes place in. I really want to say it takes place in U.C but that seems unlikely based on the setting and designs. U.C was full of newer designs and highly advanced Gundams, which include several series such as Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (UC0096), Mobile Suit Gundam F91 (UC0123) and Mobile Suit Victory Gundam (UC0153). But then again it could also end up like the Turn A Gundam series was and could be an alternative time line in which all the Gundam universe converge in one sort or another (Go watch Turn A Gundam if you don’t know what I mean).
Of course all this is speculation as we have no idea what universe this will end up being and for that matter it could end up being a completely different universe altogether. But we’ll have to wait and see what happens with the show when it finally airs.
