Project Grip, a spiritual successor to Rollcage is in the works

If there’s one thing that Psygnosis did right in its days before Sony shut them down (Curse you Sony!), was put out some very fast and fun racing games, mostly notably the WipeOut and Rollcage series. Both games were futurist, fast pace racers that tested a gamers ability to think fast and perform even faster. They were some of the best combat racing games available for their time.  I’ve spend many a days playing the hell out of both of these games and for good reason.

And while the former is on track to get receive a spiritual successor in Formula Fusion, there hasn’t been anyone who has attempted to bring back the other frantic racing title.

That is until now.

Over at Codemonkey, there’s been rumbling that someone is working on a spiritual successor to Rollcage. Simply being called “Project Grip“, this title is set to bring back everything that made Rollcage such as fun and demanding title. Currently the project is a 2-man show and there’s quite a bit of work ahead of the team, which is why they’ll be taking Project Grip to Kickstarter in the near future.

But we’ve a long way to go before the battles can be reborn. After all, we are just two people, and we’re going to need a fair few more. More people, and more money, lots of money. More than we could possibly find for ourselves, Grip is heading to KickStarter, this Summer. And if you want this project to succeed, if you want to be in the fight, we’re going to need your help. You, me, and everybody here, will have to shout with all the air our lungs can muster. To be seen, to be heard, in the blizzard of activity that courses through the web each and every nanosecond of each and every day, it is only those that shout the loudest that are ever really heard. We need you. We need all of you. – Rob Baker

There’s not much to go on about the title other than it being powered by Unreal Engine 4 and the short teaser that was released, although I fully expect that to change soon.

I can’t wait to see what they have in store for this title, but for now we’ll have just have to wait until they’re ready to give us more info. I just hope that E-Z Rollers is also in tow with the new project, I can’t get enough of the Rollcage soundtracks and Breakbeat Generation is easily on of the best tracks for the game.
