In brightest day, in darkest night, no trailer shall escape our site. Especially not this one for the upcoming show, Lanterns, a joint production from DC and HBO Max about iconic Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
In the teaser trailer, we see Hal, played by the legendary Kyle Chandler, taking a new recruit for the Green Lantern Corps through some training. John Stewart, played by, Aaron Pierre, is still green when it comes to using his powers to defend the Earth, and he doesn’t seem all that sure of Hal’s methods either. They come across a small town in Nebraska where a murder has occurred, and figure it’s time to do good. But the situation is more complicated than it seems, with Kelly MacDonald playing the no-nonsense Sheriff Kerry. Though we don’t seem to see him in the trailer, we do know Ulrich Thomsen will play Sinestro, a classic villain of the franchise, though whether a Green or Yellow Lantern is yet unknown.
The trailer gives us a good tonal look at Lanterns, which has some of the grit and humor we’ve come to expect from DC’s latest fare. There will be action, special effects abound, and at least a little lore (though Hal doesn’t seem to interact much with his alien counterparts if the teaser is to be believed). I didn’t pick up on any of the typical tongue-in-cheek Gunn flair, so the show might be going for a more serious edge than the movies have been thus far. Hopefully it’ll be malleable enough that we can see these versions of Hal and John in one of the future movies. And yes, there is confirmation that Nathan Fillion will be reprising his role as the Guy Gardner, another Earth Green Lantern who made his cinematic debut in last year’s Superman.
Lanterns is set to premiere on HBO Max sometime in August 2026.
