The Story
Gyaro and his team push themselves to the limit as they completely redo Chapter 6’s storyboards and manuscript with only a week until the deadline. The editing department pulls some strings and gets the deadline pushed back by just a mere two hours. Sako, their editor, is visiting their studio to immediately upload completed pages to their shared cloud storage. That’s how down-to-the-wire things are; however, this was all for a chapter that wasn’t the deciding factor in their battle with Fugaku. All of this was the groundwork for the seventh chapter.
When Fugaku realizes this, he suggests something insane… redrawing his chapter 7 manuscript, but there will be no storyboard. To save time… everything will be drawn in permanent ink… essentially turning an entire chapter into a live drawing session. As the interview with Fugaku, recorded in the previous volume, airs, we get some insight into Fugaku and his mantra.
With the seventh chapter published, all that remains are the results of the votes. As they wait, Fugaku invites Garou out to lunch. As they are eating, the editorial department is thrown into chaos over a massive announcement. Regardless of the results, a special project is on the horizon, and just as one battle ends, another one with even higher stakes begins!
Characters
Fugaku was the main center of attention as we received, not really a backstory, but more or less his reasons for becoming a mangaka. In truth, he has no penchant for manga. He just recognizes the fact that manga can bring him fame, wealth, and status all in one go. He admitted that since Japan is rich in manga, that was the vehicle he chose to obtain his desired lifestyle. If it were any other medium that could guarantee him that, he would have gone that route instead. Despite that, he also uses manga as a vehicle so that he can spread his ideals to children across the globe and fill their minds with his beliefs. If this were a fantasy series, it would be the equivalent to the main antagonist aiming to achieve god-like status. Still, even though he has an uncanny and super egotistical view of himself, he cannot deny the fact that he has things he can learn, and Garou has taught him one of those lessons!
Outside of this, there wasn’t much development for our other characters. Seiichiro did share that he and his family are manga fans who read everything in Orochi and discuss it on a weekly basis; however, when he was asked if his family were huge fans of Blue Sky Brigade, there was a slight pause on his behalf before answering “yes.” That seemed a little suspicious, and like he was just trying to be kind to his boss. I don’t know if there was any deeper meaning to it, or if it was just a quirk, but we’ll see if anything gets built from this.
Final Thoughts
In my previous review, I talked at length about predictability, and the outcome of this battle was just about as predictable as it going to the 1-1 rubber match. What I did like, however, was that even after the results were known, there was an acknowledgement that it wasn’t a true overall victory, and the rivalry is far from over. I liked how that ending segued into the cliffhanger ending because it builds off of that result and raises the stakes to even greater heights.
Without going too deeply into spoilers, this opens the door for Miyama (as Garou) to return. He has been missing for quite some time; however, Garou (as Miyama) mentioned him in this volume, and suddenly, we are given the perfect vehicle for him to return. During Garou’s mention of him, a few lines were written that perfectly foreshadowed what we’re going to see in the upcoming story arc. Again, it’s a bit of predictability here; however, I don’t mind it because this series has danced around this moment for six volumes now, so I think it’s time to have another test of mettle between them!
The quality of the series continues to remain steady, and I’m looking forward to what Volume 7 has in store!
