Santa Monica Studio and Mad Cat Studios have released a new DLC for God of War: Sons of Sparta, known as “The Pit.” A brutal endgame roguelike challenge mode designed for those who think they have mastered there is to Kratos’s abilities. Known as the Pit of Agonies, this separate mode throws players, either single player row two-player offline co-op, into randomized encounters with different enemy combinations and reward pools each time they attempt a run.
It is normally unlocked after finishing the main story to ensure players are fully familiar with Kratos’ weapons and the foes they will face. However, for those who want to jump in early, there is a classic style unlock code available from the main menu: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, L1, R1, Touchpad.
Yep, that is the classic Konami code, or what we commonly refer to it as the Contra code. Once that code is entered, The Pit becomes accessible as a new menu option.
Each run begins by selecting an Agony, a global difficulty modifier that changes how encounters unfold, whether that means destroying enemy healing sources or dealing with explosive foes. As you progress, you can stack or intensify Agonies to make each attempt even more punishing.
Clearing runs earns Symbols of Suffering tied to your chosen Agonies, unlocking additional modifiers over time. Players also collect Ashes of Agony, a Pit-specific currency used to purchase permanent upgrades that carry across attempts. For those who care about bragging rights, the mode tracks both current and high scores at the end of every run.
