With Mortal Kombat 1 being gone after its’ 2023 release in terms of new content releases, Mortal Kombat Co-creator Ed Boon has a question to the audience about another shelved game. Ed Boon has gone to twitter about the ask the fans about the state of Killer Instinct and a potential runback of the fighting game franchise.
Best way to bring back Killer Instinct..

Rare Studios’ classic 90s Nintendo exclusive franchise was rebooted, by DoubleHelix in 2013 for the Xbox as an exclusive before making its way to Steam. Some of Double Helix’s team has moved on to green…err redder pastures in the form of InvincibleVS.
Some of InvincibleVS‘ mechanics do feel as though the title was borrowing from the ressurected franchise. For Ed Boon and Netherrealm to move on from the latest Mortal Kombat game to this does feel sudden. There has been rumors about Netherrealm’s next game circulating since last year. There have been different ideas around that including a potential Injustice sequel.
History wise, Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat were amazing additions to the fighting game genre that came from the west in a Japanese dominated market for the genre. Midway Games was once a publisher for the sequel of Killer Instinct at some point, so the connection is definitely there.
There is an hour still left to vote to either keep it to Xbox or branch it out to other systems as well as the free-to-play model’s return.
