Marvel Games and Limited Run Games have announced MARVEL MaXimum Collection, a retro compilation that pulls together six classic Marvel titles from the arcade, 8-bit, and 16-bit eras. The collection was created in collaboration with Konami Digital Entertainment and is headed to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC via Steam.
This isn’t just one version of each game either. In several cases, you’re getting the arcade and console releases bundled together.
Here’s what’s included:
- X-Men: The Arcade Game (Arcade) – And not that horrible version that was re-released on the Xbox 360 Arcade.
- Captain America and The Avengers (Arcade, Sega Genesis, NES)
- Spider-Man/Venom: Maximum Carnage (SNES, Sega Genesis)
- Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety (SNES, Sega Genesis)
- Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge (SNES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear)
- Silver Surfer (NES)
Ok… yes, I am a bit disappointed that that horrible Atari 2600 version of Spider-Man and the Sega Genesis version if X-Men aren’t being included. But c’mon, Maximum Carnage. Who can say no to perhaps the best retro Spider-Man game that has ever been. Ok, maybe that’s the nostalgia speaking.
Beyond the games themselves, MARVEL MaXimum Collection includes modern quality-of-life features like rewind, save states, display filters, and a built-in music player. There’s also a digital archive packed with box art, manuals, and vintage ads for anyone who misses flipping through paper inserts before starting a game.
No release date has been announced yet, but for anyone, like me, who grew up dropping quarters into arcade cabinets or grinding through brutal 16-bit difficulty spikes, this looks like a solid nostalgia hit with some welcome modern upgrades. My fingers are crossed that this is a solid release that doesn’t disappoint.
