Actor James Van Der Beek, best known for his role on the 1990s teen drama Dawson’s Creek, passed away at age 48 after fighting stage 3 colorectal cancer.
The news was announced on his Instagram page on February 11th, stating:
Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.
The 1990s heartthrob was also known for roles in Varsity Blues, the Jay ad Silent Bob movies, The Rules of Attraction, Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23, and a run on Dancing with the Stars. Many celebrities have come out in mourning for their former costar and friend, including director Kevin Smith and actress Reese Witherspoon.
He had announced his cancer diagnosis in November 2024, though he had been diagnosed in the summer of 2023. He aimed to raise awareness of colorectal cancers, which have been on the rise in the under-50 population.
Van Der Beek is survived by his wife Kimberly, and their six children.
