After launching as an Epic Games Store exclusive in May 2025, Blades of Fire, the first original IP from MercurySteam, is finally making its way to Steam. The upgraded version, titled Blades of Fire 2.0, will launch on Steam on May 14, 2026, nearly one year after its initial debut.
But this is not just a simple storefront lift and shift. Alongside the Steam release, MercurySteam is rolling out a massive Version 2.0 update across all platforms, and it will be free for existing players of the game.
What’s New In 2.0?
Well, lots of stuff, actually. The Blades of Fire 2.0 update is being positioned as the most complete version of the game yet. It introduces a full New Game Plus mode along with a new “Titanium” Challenge Level for players looking for a tougher experience. Players will also gain access to new weapon parts and skins, which are exclusively available in New Game Plus, as well as a new Boss Revival Mode that allows them to refight bosses and earn Adso’s Spells.
The update further expands customization with Elements Transmutation, giving players the ability to change their weapon’s material. Photo Mode has also been added alongside various quality-of-life improvements. On the technical side, Blades of Fire 2.0 will support Steam Deck and include support for NVIDIA DLSS 4, offering improved performance and image quality for compatible PC hardware.
When we reviewed Blades of Fire on PC last year, we felt the game struggled with performance issues and overly complicated systems, particularly within its Forge mechanics and combat structure. At the time, we described it as “a blade too dull to handle.” However, we also noted that beneath those frustrations was a genuinely interesting world and a promising foundation that could shine with refinement. With Blades of Fire 2.0 introducing new content, expanded difficulty options, technical upgrades, and quality-of-life improvements, this Steam release could represent the second chance the game needed.
There is also a demo currently available on Steam, giving players the opportunity to try Blades of Fire 2.0 for themselves ahead of launch, and progression from the demo will carry over to the full game.
