The Story
The fifteenth volume of In Another World with My Smartphone begins with the Pruning tournament. There, Touya watches as everyone assists Pam. We learn about the various tribes, along with one tribe that uses nefarious means, such as poison, to attempt to get the upper hand. Of course, Touya has a counter for it… just as he does for about anything else. Once The Pruning is over, the tribe that lost didn’t take the news all too well. They summoned some giant wood golems, looking to overtake the wishing tree for themselves. Of course, Touya had some upgraded Frame Gear on hand, so they were dispatched, caught, and removed rather quickly.
Once the Pruning event was over, we took a small break, where Touya decided to make a piano. Then, it’s off to find another piece of Babylon. This time, it takes him to Xenohas, the land of the demons. Despite it sounding like a rough trip, Touya arrives and finds the ruins without any resistance or detection whatsoever. After solving a few of the doctor’s puzzles, we meet Irisfam, or Fam for short, who kisses Touya to register his DNA, and The Library is all his… and Leen’s… because she used her womanly charm to get Touya’s permission to read through everything there.
While looking through the books, Touya finds one that classifies the different types of Phrase. There, he makes a startling discovery! As he contemplates how to deal with the potential of an even greater threat, he visits the guild to try to get some information. While there, he learns a dragon is attacking the lands around Sandora… and south of Sandora, there are ruins akin to a dungeon. Our volume concludes with Touya deciding to conduct a little scouting.
Characters
I spoke too soon. Last time, we didn’t add any new characters; however, this time, I had to break out my spreadsheet because we have a few new entries along with some development with some of our already-established characters.
First up is Moroha Mochizuki… aka the second fake sister of Touya and the God of Swords. She’s been watching for a little while now and decides to take part in The Pruning. Karen noticed her immediately, and when they met… well… the explanation was just as simple as what I just stated… she was watching, and now, here she is… and she’s part of Touya’s harem. There truly isn’t anything more to her at this point.
Next is Sonia Parallem – She’s a half-human, half-dragon. She possesses incredible strength and fighting ability, but she also has a Mystic Eye, which allows her to see through illusions. She saw right through Touya’s illusion of pretending to be a girl; however, after Sonia won her match, she was targeted for revenge. Touya saved her and, as thanks, she decided to keep quiet about his disguise. She………. Did NOT join his harem! Wow… that was surprising, but… I have a feeling that as long as this series pumps out volumes, there’s a chance.
Irisfam is the newest robot that guards The Library of Babylon. That’s about it as far as her character goes. Her only quirk is to remind people to be quiet because they are in a library… and she’s read millions of books by reading non-stop for 5,000 years. Another one joins the harem.
After the Pruning, all of the tribes, not just Pam’s, pledge allegiance to Touya, turning the Western Alliance into the East-West Alliance. I guess this means that we will see more of her in the future.
Leen was granted permission to read the books in the Library; however, she mentioned how a girl named Eris was the court magician of Mismede, and she believes that she should be Touya’s court magician… even going as far as to name Eris as the new Chief of Mismede. She even proposes to Touya to be his 8th fiancée; however, Touya is on the fence about it.
Final Thoughts
The Pruning tournament wasn’t as impactful as I had hoped it to be. The majority of the matches were glossed over except Elize vs Sonia. They gave that one the most attention. Even the finals were just either single-page or single-panel results. I was hoping to see more out of it, but with the pacing this series has had since its inception, I’m not completely surprised that the majority of it was glossed over.
We now have the 7th piece of Bablyon, and with it, near limitless knowledge. I love how there was this huge deal about Touya restricting access to the Library, having Leen practically sign her life away to Touya just to get access, and then everyone just shows up and starts browsing books like they’re in a Barnes and Noble. What happened to all of that restricted access? Oh well, it looks like some of the girls are powering up after discovering books with ancient spells in them. That should come in handy vs the Phrase. Speaking of, the revelation they revealed was quite interesting, and I makes me wonder about a certain character and what his Ende game is… (yeah, I wasn’t so subtle about that, was I?).
It looks like all of that MIGHT be put on hold as Volume 16 looks to take us south of Sandora to some ruins. It seems like a simple scouting mission; however, whenever we hear “ruins,” we know it might be another piece of Babylon, or… it could just be the dragon’s lair since those two bits of information were relatively close to one another. In any event, we’ll find out next time!
