If you didn’t know, we’re now less than a year away from the arrival of “Avengers: Doomsday”, the first of the next two-part Marvel Cinematic Universe Avengers films. As I’ve covered on The Outerhaven, the MCU has been going through a rough spot ever since Endgame back in 2019, and they’ve even had to scrap things like having Kang be a main villain for the Avengers to fight. Instead, they brought back Robert Downey Jr. to be Doctor Doom, and he’s not alone in his return, as the OG Captain America, Steve Rogers, will return as well.
To celebrate the “1 year away” milestone, several “Avengers: Doomsday” teasers were dropped during the previews for Avatar Fire and Ash. The first showed Steve Rogers going to his new home, looking at his Captain America uniform…and then holding his son…
As you can see at the end, the timer is counting down until Steve Rogers returns. We also got the first official poster for the film:

So, what to make of this? Well, it’s complicated. Many were hoping after “Avengers: Endgame” that Marvel would truly “move forward” with its saga and build up new heroes to take the mantle for what came next. Except, that didn’t happen, and the attempts that did happen were either box office bombs, didn’t meet expectations, and made many, including myself, wonder if the MCU was being unraveled before our very eyes.
Thus, we’re getting a lot of clear nostalgia in this film with RDJ being brought back as a new character, Steve Rogers coming back, and likely more “multiversal shenanigans” to make it feel like a “true epic.” Yet, will it really mean as much as it could if the story had been built up to more meaningfully? We’ll have to wait a year to see.
