While Team Cherry and Hollow Knight: Silksong were snubbed at The Game Awards, at least in my honest opinion, it clearly didn’t hurt the game’s momentum. Despite the many years it took to finally arrive, the developer has confirmed that Silksong was a massive success, selling over seven million copies worldwide, not including players accessing the game through Xbox Game Pass.
With Hollow Knight: Silksong’s launch year coming to a close, we wanted to take a moment and share a peek at what we’ve been working on, what’s available now, and what’s coming in 2026.
But firstly, and most importantly, we wanted to say a huge thank you to all the players who’ve braved Silksong’s distant and dangerous lands. That’s over seven million of you who’ve purchased the game, alongside millions more playing on Xbox Game Pass!
It’s a truly staggering number of players, more than we could have ever expected (enough to crash all of the storefronts!). Watching the community grow, seeing the amazing art, the mods, the unexpected strategies, and the support between players through the game’s challenges has been hugely rewarding for us here at home. Your continued enthusiasm remains a massive motivator as we work towards expanding the game even further.
So, what does a team do after finally releasing one of the most anticipated games of the decade? They announce DLC. Team Cherry has confirmed the first expansion, Hollow Knight: Silksong – Sea of Sorrow, is already in development. Even better, players won’t have to wait years to experience it, as it will be released at an announced 2026 release date.
Sea of Sorrow will introduce new areas, bosses, items, and more to keep Hornet busy on her journey. And yes, the expansion will be completely free. While Team Cherry hasn’t shared a release date yet, but they promise more information ahead of launch before heading back into their now-familiar quiet development mode.
All things considered, Team Cherry is in an enviable position. After delivering a modern masterpiece, you would expect the studio to take a well-earned break. Instead, they are doubling down, and players are the ones who benefit.
