The Story

This volume is centered around one thing and one thing only: Keiichi’s birthday. Naturally, Yuri wants to celebrate it, and Keiichi does not. In fact, he even states that birthdays are not something that is celebrated in his family. It seriously ticks Yuri off when he tells her that his birthday is insignificant and that she should ignore it. This ends up with them getting into yet another argument.

Things look to be rocky between them, but suddenly, things go from bad to worse when Keiichi shows up at her job… as the new employee! Thoroughly confused, he explains that he felt as if he worked alongside her; he could spend a day in her shoes, and that would, in turn, get him to understand where she was coming from. Of course, this doesn’t do a single thing to help smooth the situation over because, like always, he was completely missing the point. Despite this, it got them talking to one another after a period of silence, but all of their bickering was interrupted when they witnessed a rather beautiful scene. All it took was something so simple as that to work through their issues… except for one.

Yuri takes it into her hands to go to Keiichi’s grandfather and personally request that Keiichi be given the day off so that they can celebrate. His grandfather reaffirms what Keiichi told her, that birthdays are not seen as a day of importance and are not celebrated in their family. She begs, pleads, and gets nowhere, but he finally caves when she resorts to blackmail! Although he caves, he has a few conditions before he agrees to let them spend time together. When she agrees to those conditions, as you would expect, they blow up in her face and completely backfire! At least… at first. Things progress, and as they do, Yuri states that she wants to… oh my. I’ll let you guys read that part for yourselves!

Characters

Once again, Keiichi’s relationship with Yuri was front and center. At first, it looked as if nothing was going to change between them. Keiichi is too stuck on following the rules and upholding family traditions. It’s to the point where it is causing a rift between him and Yuri. At first, Yuri was understanding, but over the course of this series, she has become more and more impatient and frustrated with things. How can she not? She finally landed him as a boyfriend, and she can’t even enjoy a normal relationship because of his family’s rules.

On the other hand, it’s not like Keiichi doesn’t know any of this, but he approaches problems with too much logic, to the point where he seems more robotic than caring. I thought that there were moments throughout the series where he would realize this and change his ways, but he hasn’t… until this volume. There was a moment where he clearly broke the rules during his birthday celebration, even though he was fully aware of the consequences. He proved that he genuinely cares about Yuri, but trying to juggle both being her boyfriend and upholding the traditions and expectations of his family is too much. The problem is, his mindset doesn’t allow him to realize that. There has to be an epiphany moment for him that makes him realize it has to be one or the other. Sooner or later, he’s going to have to make a choice, but can he?

Final Thoughts

While there was a slight crack in Keiichi’s ironclad logical thought processing, I’m not convinced that he’s going to learn anything from this. Perhaps Yuri’s actions could be the catalyst for a change, but that remains to be seen. Despite that, Keiichi’s birthday ended up being one of the best moments in the series thus far. It clearly showed how far Yuri would go to do something nice for him, even if Keiichi continued to push her away. Then again, when she talked to his grandfather, it became clear as to why Keiichi continued to deny her wanting to celebrate. It was just a family tradition, and when something like that is embedded within you, it just becomes a natural part of life for you.

While it seemed like Keiichi was being stubborn, learning the reasoning behind it made it kind of sad. Then again, I, personally, don’t like having my birthday celebrated for personal reasons, so it’s not like I didn’t resonate with Keiichi at first. His situation is vastly different than mine, but part of me kind of understood the whole “don’t celebrate me” aspect. That’s why, at first, I found Yuri’s forwardness annoying more than anything. But when I took myself out of the equation, it was clear that as someone who loves him unconditionally, she would go so far as to press the issue. As stubborn and as much of a traditionalist as Keiichi is, he’s super lucky to have someone like Yuri by his side.

With only two volumes to go, something has to break. With the way the birthday celebration turned out, I’m hoping this is the catalyst that causes that much-needed change within Keiichi, although, with the way the manga ended, it seemed like one giant gag more than progression, so I have my doubts. That kind of makes me wonder how all of this is going to wrap up. Well, the penultimate volume is next, so hopefully we can glean some information about the upcoming ending!
