Hideaki Anno confirmed that as of December 10, 2025, Gainax has been officially closed down, ending its 42-year tenure as one of the most recognized anime studios of all time.
Gainax produced iconic anime such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, and Gurren Lagann. While many fans will fondly remember the shows it made, they will also remember the financial and legal issues that plagued the studio over the years.
It was due to these issues that the studio had to undergo a bankruptcy reorganization. Anno expressed that the reorganization was finalized, and the studio had ceased all operations.
