Fallout TV Series Success Surprised Todd Howard and Bethesda

Sometimes...things just work out well.

Fallout Franchise to Expand with New Games, Confirms Todd Howard, Fallout TV Series

As someone who has seen the amazing highs and soul-crushing lows of video game adaptations, it’s totally fair for someone to hear about a new adaptation and wonder “which side of the coin” will fall. We’ve all seen ones with plenty of promise, but they fell through upon release, and we’re still getting those today! So, when the Fallout TV Series was announced, and it took quite a while to get released, many were rightfully fearful that it could be another to fall on its face. Instead, it was one of the best video game adaptations ever, and Season 2 is upon us.

While many are waiting in anticipation of what Lucy, Maximus, The Ghoul, and others will do in The Wasteland that is New Vegas, Todd Howard recently talked with GamesRadar+ and admitted that while he and the rest of Bethesda felt the adaptation would help the games, they didn’t expect it to become so beloved:

“We sort of expected the franchise was going to get popular with the TV show. We’ve had a timeline of all the Fallout work that we’ve been doing and we’re going to be doing. I will say, the popularity of the show is way more than we expected. So it really was making sure the games are ready for all the players who are coming into them.”

And there you have it! The Fallout TV Series has done better than expected, and that’s likely to play into the games later on, if Todd Howard is to be believed. For those who are waiting with anticipation, Season 2 drops its first episodes on Amazon Prime Video on December 17th.
