It’s been a long road to get here… No, really, Metroid Prime 4 Beyond was first revealed at E3 2017, which was the first E3 that would show off the new Nintendo Switch titles. Since that announcement, the game has gone through a total reboot, more teases, delays, and then, it will get dual-launched on both the Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2...over eight years since that first trailer. Yeah, it’s been a long road. Yet, it’s here, and today, the first reviews dropped for the game…and while the Metacritic score is good, it might not be the score you think it will be.
For those who don’t recall, the original scores for the OG trilogy were 97, 92, and 90, respectively. Currently, the Metacritic score for Metroid Prime 4 Beyond is 81. That’s quite a drop, wouldn’t you say? It makes you wonder what led to such lower scores this go around.
After poking around the “mixed” reviews, I found that most of those reviewers felt that the game tried to “add too much” to stand out from what came before. Many critiqued certain open-world sections and pacing within the game.
However, one reviewer from the more positive side of the aisle noted that the game may have had some incredibly unrealistic expectations due to how long it’s been in development, which is a fair thing to note. Plus, if you’ve paid attention to recent Nintendo releases, some reviewers have gone out of their way to give a low score to a title that gamers themselves absolutely enjoyed, like with Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment, Kirby Air Riders, or Pokemon Legends Z-A.
Thus, as with all game reviews, you should take things only at the surface level, and then simply play the game yourself to see what you think of it. We’ll do our best to get our review added to this mix as soon as possible.
