Nintendo Announces New Subsidiary Acquisition

Trying to "strengthen their development structure."

There was a time not too long ago when major publishers, and even certain developers, were trying to buy up other dev teams in the gaming industry to try and “strengthen their banners.” Microsoft and Sony were some of the guilty parties in this action, but others did partake, with varying levels of success. In contrast, Nintendo really doesn’t play that way. They prefer to focus on the teams they already have and expand from within. Or, if they do add in a new team, it’ll be one that can truly help all the other projects that they have going on at the time.

In a surprising movie, The Big revealed that it has acquired controlling shares in a Singapore-based subsidiary that was previously owned by Bandai Namco. According to a press release about the action, the publisher had already worked with the group on titles like Splatoon, and they specialize in “creating in-game art assets.”

By April 1st next year, they’ll get 80% of the company’s shares, and then collect the rest later on. Once everything is done, they’ll be known as Nintendo Studios Singapore Pte. Ltd.

Why do this? The press release states it was done “for the purpose of strengthening its development structure.”

In other words, they’ll use this team to help with various projects they’re already working on, lessening the load that is already upon the current teams. This is very much a part of their M.O., and it speaks to how they view business versus how their rivals view it. We’ll keep you posted on whether any other such moves are made by The Big in the future.
