The Story
Lisa is on top of Imazumi when the girls return to find her trying to have him all to herself. After some scolding, she backs off. It turns into a conversation about why she’s so infatuated with him, which gives us a little bit of a backstory… before she falls asleep in the middle of her explanation!
Next up, Yukina and Imaizumi spend some time together. They go out to a seaside café, then spend some time on the beach. There are some really cute and tender moments here, and they get to talking about her moving to Tokyo, living with her brother, and how he is kind of a womanizer. Since she grew up there, some of the locals know her, and some of them just happened to be passing by, spotting her. She grabs Imaizumi and runs, but their encounter coaxes them to call each other by their given names, meaning that their relationship is deepening.
This spills into the next chapter when they return to school. Yukina’s feelings continue to deepen; however, this causes a bit of jealousy. So much so that Eguchi recognizes the situation and comes up with a plan to get everyone out of the classroom. Even though it was to get them to clear the air, he knows exactly what’s about to happen. When he peeks inside, his suspicions are right on the money!
From her, Hamasaki has caught a cold, so she has been recovering; however, it was only a matter of time before Imaizumi caught as well. As Hamasaki recovers, she realizes that she needs to play nurse for Imaizumi. Once all of that is settled, they all sit down to enjoy a nice meal together. They go to get Lisa to have her join, but Imaizumi (or Slutzumi as she calls him) traps him like an ant caught in an antlion’s den! Thankfully, everyone knows her goals and immediately comes to his rescue. As they are eating, we get some déjà vu from Volume 2’s cliffhanger… Imaizumi’s mother has returned! Round 2 coming up!
Characters
I really love the growth here between Imaizumi and Yukina. Out of all of the girls, Yukina, despite losing her mind slightly over him, seems like the best girlfriend choice for him. Despite her being crazy about Imaizumi, their day out together shows that she’s attentive and caring. They felt like an actual couple, which is something that I can’t say for the other girls. The others do care about him, but it seems that they are more interested in using him as their plaything than anything else. At least Yukina has that connection developing, so hopefully, once all the dust settles, she ends up with him as a permanent couple; however, I can’t truly see that happening given the nature of the series. We’ll see, though.
Lisa is still as crazy as ever. Even though she’s quite forceful when it comes to Imazumi, her backstory lends itself as a “love at first sight” moment. Watching him with his friends, observing him being considerate and picking up trash off the street, and just admiring the way he looks all contributed to her feelings towards him. This gives her a more human side as she’s not just some crazed woman who is looking for a quick score… she has genuine feelings of admiration for him, despite her forceful and brash ways. Even still, she’s not better than Yukina, but slightly better than Hamasaki and Ruri.
Final Thoughts
This volume felt a bit more situational throughout the chapters, but there were some connecting stories, such as Hamasaki’s cold being touched upon in one chapter, then seeing Imaizumi catch it in another chapter. Again, I liked Yukina and Imaizumi’s deepening bond, and calling one another by their given names was super cute. They have my ship approval, for sure! Eguchi’s causing a distraction in the classroom was quite hilarious. Although I don’t think it’s physically possible to suck someone’s brain out with a straw, kudos to him for trying.
I’m a bit peeved that the ending to this volume was, essentially, a repeat of what happened at the end of Volume 2. Imaizumi’s mother coming back to visit to check up on her perceived relationship isn’t as terrifying as the first time. After all, they were just sitting down and eating dinner together, versus last time when they were all practically naked due to a broken air conditioner. There is no compromising position this time, so a simple “Oh, I have friends over” excuse could easily fly. The gravity isn’t as dense, but maybe when the fifth volume comes around, we’ll get a reason to worry about her being there. Right now, I don’t feel any sense of dread.
Overall, it was another great volume! Watching them fight over Imaizumi never gets old, and their little punishment moments are appreciated by the truly cultured!
