Shuntaro Furukawa Acknowledges That Nintendo Switch 2 Still Has A “Significant Gap” To Make Up

They're off to a hot start, but now, they need to maintain it.

Right now, it’s really good to be a Nintendo fan. Even with all the hate that is being thrown at the fanbase, as I talked about in the most recent Nintendo Entertainment Podcast, the company is currently dominating the industry. The Nintendo Switch 2 has sold over 10 million units, all of its big titles have sold multiple millions, and more big games are coming soon. You’d be fair in thinking that the company might be “reveling in its success.” Yes, for President Shuntaro Furukawa, that’s not actually the case. He’s keeping a level head and focusing on making Switch 2 as big as possible.

In a special Investor Q&A, Shuntaro Furukawa talked about how the new console is doing well, but it has a long way to go to match up to the sales its predecessor had:

“Our goal for Nintendo Switch 2 at launch was to leverage the high engagement with Nintendo Switch and encourage all existing Nintendo Switch owners to purchase the new system. Nintendo Switch 2 hardware unit sales have exceeded 10 million units as of the end of September 2025, but there is still a significant gap compared to the Nintendo Switch installed base of over 150 million units. Given that fact, for now we expect to remain in a phase where it is primarily existing Nintendo Switch owners who will purchase Nintendo Switch 2. But at the same time, we will work to convey the appeal of Nintendo Switch 2 to new consumers through the release of software titles and other means.”

That’s a very humble approach to take, given the records they’ve shattered since June. Yet, they’re already fulfilling that promise, as there are big games coming in both the next few weeks and in the first months of 2026 that will help make the Switch 2 the “destination console” once people are ready to buy it.
