Magic: The Gathering x Avatar Card Preview – Exclusive First Look

The Prerelease of Magic: The Gathering x Avatar: The Last Airbender, the latest crossover expansion set for Magic: The Gathering (which is quickly becoming the Fortnite of card games), is right around the corner. Thanks to Wizards of the Coast, The Outerhaven is proud to bring you an exclusive preview of one of the cards from the Magic: The Gathering x Avatar: The Last Airbender set.

That card is Fire Navy Trebuchet, an uncommon card of the Artifact Creature subclass.

Fire Navy Trebuchet is a quick study.

You can cast Fire Navy Trebuchet for 2 generic and 1 black mana

  • It is a defender card, meaning it has no attack value
  • It has reach, perfect for taking down those annoying flying creature cards
  • When you attack, you create a 2 attack/1 defense colorless construct artifact creature token that comes in tapped and attacking, adding a possible 2 extra damage to your attack
  • When you reach the beginning of the next end step, the token is sacrificed and removed

Got that? Fire Navy Trebuchet is pretty much a way to get an extra 2 damage in with an attack. However, since it would be considered another attacking creature, the Fire Navy Trebuchet can be blocked or have its damage negated. But if the attack gets through, it can be just enough for you to get the edge over your opponent.

My advice… It isn’t very easy. Since this activates on attack, the effect is pointless, and since this would be triggered on your attack phase, your opponent can declare blockers in a normal manner. This card would be most effective when you can target flying creatures that are already on the board, as well as whatever you choose with your standard attack. Defensively, having a blocker with 4 defense should be a good deterrent, but it would crumble against ramp decks. So, my advice is to sideboard this card in standard play, and maybe have it on hand to swap into a Commander deck should you go up against something with flyers.
