It’s Wednesday, and you know what time it is. AEW Dynamite is back once again for us to witness what happened after the fallout from WrestleDream. Let’s break it all down in my AEW Dynamite Recap!
Let’s get it started!
It started off with Hangman’s thoughts after The Opps had given him a beating. He vowed to ruin Joe’s life. Well, he has his hands full. Samoa Joe, aka Sweet Tooth, has no qualms beating him up.
With that being said, our first match was for the AEW Trios Titles between the ‘heel’ OPPS vs The Hurt Syndicate. The top-view camera entrance angle was fire. While Shibata was the only ‘non-meat’ in this match, at least he’s stiff.
A great way to start out the match was putting Shelton against Shibata. Being an ex-Suzuki-Gun member, Shelton had plenty of encounters with him in NJPW. The crowd wanted a Hobbs vs Bobby matchup badly, but Joe wasn’t going to give them the satisfaction to start the match.
After the break, we finally get to witness both of them go at it! Of course, there was a double clothesline spot. MVP’s ballin’ spot popped the crowd. Bobby is the only person I know who could choke-slam Hobbs. Ricobald appeared to distract MVP, and The Opps picked up the W. I don’t think their rivalry will ever end. Which may or not be bad…should MVP “sub out” for another potential member of The Hurt Syndicate…
After the match, Joe grabbed the mic. He cheaply popped the crowd by calling the women “fat”. Really, Joe? But it looked like he’s not done with Hangman. Would there be a rematch at Full Gear? If so, what stipulation should it be to ensure that the meat, I mean, “beef,” between them ends?
Renee was backstage with Statlander. It’s official! She accepted the challenge to face Mercedes at Full Gear. I really don’t know who’s going to win that one.
(Todd Edit: Go Big Stat Daddy!!!)
A wild Darby appeared! He started by mentioning that people said he wasn’t responsible. He made it clear that he’s willing to die for AEW, and that makes him someone that all of us can look up to in a certain way. He also mentioned that, as the Death Riders were still around, he wouldn’t be far behind. I’m with you, Darby.
Jungle Jack was cutting a promo backstage about beating the Broke Bucks at WrestleDream. Could they get back to the top and win the AEW Tag Team Champions back? I guess we would have to wait and see… Don’t forget, the current champs are pretty epic, but that would be a bout I’d love to see!
The second match was for the AEW Women’s Tag Team tournament picks for the first round. A lot was at stake because the winner would be able to pick who their opponent would be. The four teams were Megan Bayne and Penelopes, Julia Hart and Skye Blue, Harley Cameron and Willow Nightingale, and Queen Aminata and Jamie Hayter.
The fact that this happened tonight, and that so many big names were guaranteed in the tournament, shows just how much Tony Khan is taking it seriously.
The crowd was excited to see Hayter face off with Bayne. That definitely would be a great 1-on-1 match in the future. Penelope’s moonsault to the floor landed on Skye’s face. Her elbow wasn’t looking too great, either. The assisted cutter between Bayne and Ford is a thing of beauty. Megan tried to perform a doomsday device on Willow, but was countered into a pounce. As the match progressed, Aminata and Hayter pinned Penelope with a stiff headbutt and Haterade combination.
After the match, Hayter grabbed the mic to select their first round opponents. Based on their past heat, of course, she picked Julia and Skye. It’s on! And, this will definitely build to Blood & Guts next month!
Backstage, the Broke Bucks were banging on TK’s door to beg him for another match. TK (who actually appeared on camera this time!) set up a 4-on-4 match between Jetspeed and Jurassic Express vs Broke Bucks and…FTR! Boooo!
Ultimo Mone was in the ring to celebrate her 12 titles. That sure was a lot of belt boys utilized to carry her belts! Wait a minute, Puppet Mone was there!!!
Poor Puppet Mone had her face smooshed in cake. Wait a minute, a wild Stat appeared! She had given Mone a taste of the cake as well! Also, a power slam through the table to boot! I really liked this segment. It was totally unexpected. Another MOTY contender between these two is all but guaranteed.
The Conglomeration came out with their new theme song. I am really in love with the song because it reminded me of Beverly Hills, 90210. Roddy, being the odd man out in the group, always pops me.
(Todd Edit: 90210 apparently WAS the inspiration for the new video!)
Tonight, Kyle O’ Reilly had a match against Moxley. The fans reminded him that “he’s a quitter.” Well said. Kyle was giving everything he had in this match. He had a running knee off the apron, a guillotine choke hold, a top rope knee drop to his spleen, a shoulder drag on the apron, two ankle locks, an axe kick, a chop block, a rolling elbow, and two Juji Gatame cross-arm breakers. Mox countered with a stalling pile driver and a bull-dog choke.
In the end, Mox assaulted the referee for a rare disqualification. The rest of the Conglomeration and Death Riders arrived at the ring. That’s so cheap, Mox. And yet…it shows just how desperate he’s getting. He’d rather get DQ’d than give up again. Mox might be breaking…
Up next was a Trios Match between Death Riders (Garcia, Yuta, Claudio) vs Conglomeration (Briscoe, OC, Roddy). The match started off technically with OC and Yoots. Briscoe had more intensity than Garcia. Roddy was exacting his revenge against losing to Claudio last week. Both guys loved punishing each other on the barricade. The crowd had some choice words for Yoots, but also chanted, “This is awesome!” I think OC has cleared off his ring rust. Briscoe was able to pin Yoots with a Jay Driller, dealing the Death Riders their second loss of the night, technically.
After the match, Ishii and PAC were going at it. Chaos ensued as Marina low blows Ishii in the yambag Jones. Darby scared off the Death Riders with Sting’s bat. Great job, Darby!
Alicia interviewed an angry ‘cake-faced’ Mone. Athena appeared to mock her new “cake look”. She also wanted Mone to be her partner in the AEW Tag Team Tournament. Is this all a ruse so that Athena could get closer to her titles? We’ll see…
(Todd Edit: I don’t care if it’s all a ruse! Having these two tag together to go for gold for a few weeks is awesome! Off to minion training, Mone!!!!)
Pink Protostar (Kyle Fletcher) was in the ring to address the crowd. He came out with some really tame-looking glasses. He bragged about his victory this past weekend against Briscoe. Mark was out to confront him for “one more shot”. I don’t know how I feel about this. Wasn’t FIVE chances enough, Mark? Thankfully, Don talked some sense to Mark and said, “No”. This was the first time I’ve actually agreed with him.
Next up was the reveal of the AEW Women’s Tag Team Tournament brackets. There will be a total of 8 teams. The brackets are as follows for the first round: Aminata and Hayter vs Sisters of Sin, Willow & Harley vs Mone & Athena, Winzaa and Riho vs Toni and Mina, and lastly, Bayne and Ford vs Tayjay. I think that this was a good balance of talent and storyline rolled into the tournament. Great picks, TK!
Between this and Blood & Guts, alongside the four epic women’s matches from WrestleDream, the women are getting plenty of time to shine in 2025. Speaking of which…
Renee caught up with Mina backstage. She hasn’t been able to contact Toni since WrestleDream. Thekla appeared to tease her, but Mina wasn’t having it, so a match at Collision was set! Stardom feud…activate!!!
The main event for the AEW Unified Title was between Bandido and “The Troll” Okada. While Okada looked aloof, the crowd was obviously pulling for Bandido. Okada was heeling it up to Bandido’s family ringside while applying damage to his bum shoulder. What a menace. Bandido landed a flurry of offense with a Diving Tornillo, Tope con Hilo, and a Frog Splash.
I was surprised by Okada’s shoulder breaker. I’ve never seen him perform that move. It’s always so impressive to me to see Bandido carrying Okada to hit that X-knee. He was able to hit the 21-plex, but wasn’t able to pin him due to his injured shoulder. Ouch. Bandido ran into that John Woo dropkick. Rainmaker by Bandido?! Bandido went to the well too often with that X-plex and 21-plex combo. Okada scouted those moves and countered with a Rainmaker of his own. 1-2-3.
This was a great match! Okada was trained in Mexico by Ultimo Dragon, so he knew how to work the Luchador Style. The fans ate it all up. And I want a rematch!
(Todd Edit: I want a rematch, too!!!!!)
After the match, the rest of the DCF came out to celebrate his defense. Takeshita came out on his own to show off his OWN prized possession, the IWGP World Championship. The show ended with a beautiful face-off. Please let this build towards Wrestle Kingdom, I beg of you, TK!
Well, that summed up tonight’s show. What did you guys think of it? Please let your thoughts be known and comment below about my AEW Dynamite Recap!
