Hideki Kamiya Discusses How Game Mechanics Drive The Titles He Makes

We see the logic in his tactics.

If we’re being honest here, there are plenty of video game developers who are fine with doing “the bare minimum” in making a good game and not doing much to “spice things up” to keep players engaged. For those devs, it’s about the “money made from the games,” not the “game’s quality” that matters most. However, in the case of Hideki Kamiya, he’s never been that way. He helped make Platinum Games so that he could make the unique titles he wanted. Then, when the developer moved away from that vision, he left and made a new group called Clovers.

In a new interview from Famitsu, Hideki Kamiya was asked about the games he makes, and he noted, as outlined by Stealth on Twitter, that for him, he wants to make video games that have special game mechanics that are only in his titles, and not others, giving two special examples of that kind of thought process:

Kamiya says that when he makes games, he likes to create and incorporate mechanics that can only be found in those games.

He used Bayonetta's 'Witch Time' and Okami's 'Celestial Brush' as examples.

If it's just pretty graphics, he isn't drawn to it. https://t.co/1LcMCcNAem pic.twitter.com/r506MvrC7y

The “dig” at graphics is particularly apt, as there are plenty of developers, and even gamers, who feel that “cutting-edge graphics” are everything, and then when the gameplay sucks, they’re left regretting their words. Kamiya, right now, is working on the sequel to Okami, and it’ll be interesting to see what new mechanics he comes up with and what others will develop as he makes more titles with his new team.
