The Story

Volume 14 of Dead Mount Death Play wraps up the hospital arc. At the end, the power caused by the dragon scale buried there opened up a massive sinkhole, swallowing a good portion of the hospital. Thankfully, everyone escaped. What followed was the one thing you could all expect in the aftermath of such a major event…. A shark party!

It was later revealed that Polka (or Riz or Corpse God, whatever your naming preference is) was late gathering snacks from the party as he went back to the hospital and retrieved the scale. Everyone was scared that it would swallow their headquarters whole, but he and Civil assured them that the scale was only a key and could only be activated by a tremendous amount of magical power, so they should be safe. This prompts Polka to pull Misaki out to the hallway to talk with her. While doing so, Xiaoyu comes running, saying that he heard a mysterious voice on the radio calling out to Polka.

Although we had some fun, we also analyzed the events at the hospital. Meanwhile, Lila ends up paying a visit to Katashiro, who has no clue why she’s there, but he goes with the flow and makes up some excuse about her being a link between himself and Corpse God. Meanwhile, we also check in with Majiri, who opts to tell everyone her true identity, giving us a bit of insight into her backstory. Also, she surprises everyone by introducing a brand-new member of the family! In the aftermath of her backstory and introducing the new family member, we learn more about Xiaoyu to close out our volume.

Characters

The biggest focus here was on Majiri. She told her story of the twin vampire sisters from the other world: Saki and Riddhe. She talked about how the kingdom tried to put all of their bets on Riddhe, attempting to create some sort of God with her, but the kingdom was destroyed. Majiri revealed herself to be Riddhe; however, Yumeji has his suspicions about her story and calls her out on them. This leads us into Xiaoyu’s backstory as well, and how he was related to those otherworldly incidents. I’m starting to think that everyone in this story is somehow from the other world in some form or another. I’m going to have to make a spreadsheet soon to keep everything straight.

Outside of this, Polka does some thinking about who tried to kill the real Polka. This leads us to gaining some slight background information on some of the members of the Shinomiya family, but nothing super concrete right now… just suspicions; however, there is a prime suspect in everything.

Final Thoughts

This series has been dropping some major lore bombs as of late; however, this volume didn’t have quite as many. That doesn’t mean that there weren’t some eye-opening moments… especially when they talked about Xiaoyu’s background. I didn’t go into detail because there is a pretty interesting connection to be made, one that raises some new questions. Just when you thought that we were done getting the answers to a lot of questions, Narita causes us to ask new ones! As expected from someone like him and his storytelling style.

The hospital arc dragged a bit, but the ending was also kind of interesting. I like how the manga said that the case involving the livetubers didn’t get solved, then turns around and introduces us to the dragon scale, what it’s capable of, but never officially links it to their disappearance, when it’s painfully obvious that it was the cause. I don’t think it was an oversight, but just an indirect and clever way of explaining things and letting the reader piece it together for themselves. The aftermath was pretty interesting because we have our detectives, Division 3, the mediators, the Agakuras, and Polka’s camp all analyzing the situation, figuring out their next moves… then we have Katashiro getting stuck with Lila, which was pretty hilarious.

Still, a great volume, but I wonder what the true purpose was of Majiri introducing her new family member? I mean, given her backstory and who it is, and her alignment with Polka, it’s kind of easy to figure out, but the “Why” behind the vague reason has yet to be given.

While there was no clear direction as to where we are going next, looking at the clues, I suspect Polka is going to continue looking into the Shinomiya family, the mediators are going to make their moves, and our detectives may uncover something related to the Bastard Children of Sabaramond as that seems to be their continuing goal, and a big physical sample fell into their lap… one that had quite an interesting feature sewn into the insides of their pants.

We’ll see where it goes, but after that big arc, I think it’s a cooldown/information gathering volume coming our way next… unless something else comes along and causes a crazy, Earth-shattering event… again.
