It’s Wednesday, and you know what that means. Tonight, AEW Dynamite celebrated a very special 6th-year anniversary with a 2-and-a-half-hour show! Now, before I start my AEW Dynamite Recap, I just wanted to say this:
Being able to witness AEW grow year by year felt as though I had taken the role of a proud parent. I was one of the ones who started watching from its inception, and let me tell you, there were a lot of ups and downs throughout this journey. AEW was that one constant that had given me joy during my darkest hours, and I am forever indebted with gratitude. I know hard work is rarely appreciated, but I just wanted to tell TK, the wrestlers, and all of the people backstage and everyone else in between that it’s ok to take a victory lap for all of the amazing work that you do each and every episode. Your impact is felt worldwide. YOU DESERVE IT! From the bottom of my heart, I wish you nothing but great success in the years to come.
*A Wild Todd Appears To Weigh In As Well!*
I’ve been with AEW since day one, and even before then, via being at the original All In at the Sears Center in Chicago (I still have my ticket from that event!) At the time, I was looking for something to truly “reignite the spark” that I had lost due to certain wrestling shows either going away or losing their luster. From the original Double or Nothing to now, the mission statement has been obvious: make the wrestling matter every time. I didn’t know well over half the original AEW roster, but now, I KNOW that AEW is truly “where the best wrestle,” and their roster is stacked with so many incredible talents that I can’t help but support them every time. AEW has given me something to look forward to every week, whether it’s a Dynamite, Collision, or a PPV. It’s pulled me out of some depressing phases, and I’m going to keep supporting them in the years to come. Happy anniversary, AEW!
With that being said, let’s get on with the show!
We started off hot with Josh Alexander with the “Money Marks” Young Bucks vs Brodido and Kenny Omega.
But before the action had started, Matt and Nick were at a casino again. Matt wanted to spend their money on another exotic introduction, but Nick gambled all of their money. The Broke Bucks are back, baby!
Kenny graced us with his Devil’s Sky theme song. I’m so glad we got to see Kenny and Josh back in action. Everyone was doing the Macarena. Could tonight finally become the night that Brody performed the Macarena?! Nope. Sad panda. But we did get to see a Brody body slam bonanza. What’s this? Bandido switched it up and body slammed Brody instead! What raw power! Josh was a big dude, but Brody made him look small. That triple pile driver was a thing of beauty, then we got a flurry of super kicks! Kenny pinned Josh with a One-Winged Angel. This was a great ‘PWG-styled‘ match to start out the night. AEW loves doing these matches, and I’m fine with them continuing!
After the match, Kenny and The Broke Bucks faced off. Will they reform? Josh interfered with a superkick to Kenny. Boos rained down from the crowd. The Bucks had clear apathy towards Kenny and decided not to participate in the beatdown. All of a sudden, Jurassic Express showed up!!! The crowd vibed to their theme. Kenny had some heat with Jungle Boy from his wrongdoings with the Elite…but Jack let it slide and continued to beat up the Young Bucks with his dinosaur at his side.
Kenny had taken to the mic and talked about the highs and lows from the beginning of AEW. He cut a babyface promo and thanked the fans who stuck with AEW and welcomed the new ones gained along the way. It was all flowers and teddy bears until…
A wild Andrade El Idolo appeared! Wait, Andrade’s already back in AEW?!?!
He looked in peak form! After he spiked Kenny to the ground with El Idolo, he joined…The Don Callis Family! Ok, this was getting ridiculous. Don seriously has 20 guys in his family now. There has to be an implosion sooner or later. Let them blow it off in a steel cage, maybe?
This was amazing. Just when I thought we were moving towards another match, this segment kept going! We had everything from a vignette, a match, run-ins, future storyline setups, a promo, and a surprise return, all cut in one continuous roll. Wow, just wow. This was pure CINEMA.
We finally had a breather with a recap of 6 years. Whew, what a wild ride. When the original AEW Dynamite theme song played, it hit me in the feels. AEW has come a long way, and I appreciate them not cutting out the “bad actors” who have tried to bring it down, because AEW isn’t afraid of its history, even if others can’t say the same…
Mark Briscoe was backstage and explained how he felt about MJF. And even though MJF ruined his chances to become the TNT Champion, he would cheer on his friend Orange Cassidy to win it tonight. Speaking of which, here comes OC to face Kyle now…
I’m so glad Cassidy is back. I missed his antics. He kept teasing the crowd by putting his hands in his pockets. For the first half of the match, it felt as if Kyle was playing with his food. If OC were a Pokémon, he would be Snorlax. He needed to wake up! While “Freshly Squeezed” chants from the crowd finally fired him up, Kyle executed a deadly spinning Michinoku driver that landed OC on his shoulder blade. That looked rough. We just got him back, Kyle! Don’t break him!!!
At one point, Don Callis tried to blast OC with his shoe, but Hologram came out for the save. Wait a minute…Hologram betrayed Cassidy! What the heck is going on? Kyle was the one that injured him on Collision last week! Kyle took full advantage of the distraction with a turnbuckle brainbuster for the pin. 1, 2, 3.
After the match, both continued their assault on OC. As Paragon and Briscoe came out to assist Cassidy, the rest of the Don Callis family appeared. Uh-Oh, wait a minute…that’s not Hologram, that’s El Clon! He’s arrived! Well, that was Don Callis member number 21. You’ve got to be kidding me.
(Todd Edit: No, Jen, they weren’t kidding…)
Renee talked to Mercedes backstage. She mentioned that while Mercedes would be the longest defending TBS Champion in 16 days, she was short on her quest to obtain 10 belts. Mercedes was looking to defend her title next week in Jacksonville for a special Title Tuesday and had her sights set on the tag belts. But who would tag with her? It was none other than Mini-Mone and Harley Cameron! Would she tag with her? We’ll have to wait and see…
(Todd Edit The Second: AEW!!!! YOU NEED TO SELL MINI-MONE PUPPETS!!!!)
The third match was between Jon Moxley, Daniel (not Danny) Garcia, and Claudio Castagnoli vs Hangman Page, Powerhouse Hobbs, and Samoa Joe. There was a lot of meat in this match, minus Daniel. Samoa Joe and Hangman weren’t on the same page despite being allies. Hangman and Mox faced off once again, and things got intense throughout the match.
Hangman pinned Claudio with the Buckshot Lariat to take the win. After the match, Samoa Joe wanted a piece of Hanger. Security filled the ring for ‘suspense’. Could this lead to a PPV match? Take my money!
Renee caught up with Hangman. Samoa Joe claimed he never beat him. Hangman offered him an AEW Championship title match at WrestleDream! Samoa Joe accepted the challenge! Let’s goooo!
The next match was between Timeless Toni Storm vs Tay Melo.
Toni looked lost without her championship. She wasn’t even wearing any wrestling gear! Tay’s gear looked fabulous. She also looked more comfortable in the ring. But in the end, Toni was able to come from behind and pinned her with a Storm Zero.
After the match, Toni spoke to the crowd. Enough with the “what” chants, guys. Toni doesn’t know who she is after losing the title. She wasn’t finished with Kris Statlander, though, and told her to name a time and place for a rematch! Will Kris accept the challenge? We will soon find out! UPDATE: Kris accepted, and they’ll face off…AT WRESTLEDREAM!!!
Sammy Guevara called out Eddie Kingston to face Dralistico on Collision. Why wouldn’t Dralistico do it himself?
Afterwards, we saw GOA vs The Swirl. Swirl gave up too much weight and strength as GOA was just too big and too strong. They picked up the win, but after the match, The Hurt Syndicate showed up to confront GOA! After losing to GOA and Ricobald at Forbidden Door, MVP admitted that he had lost a step and was the weak link. But he wanted a rematch that didn’t involve wrestling. He wanted a street fight next Tuesday!
(Todd Edit Part 3: Some people wonder if a new Hurt Syndicate member could arrive next week…but who could it be…?)
The main event was a Mixed Tornado Tag Match between Darby Allin and Kris Statlander vs Wheeler Yuta and Marina Shafir. With stipulations like these, who needed referees? As usual, Darby hated his spine. Marina and Yuta had the advantage early, but Kris delivered with a finger poke and suplexed Marina to the table. Darby was no slouch either. He suplexed Yuta onto a bed of chairs!
Darby loved to stuff his opponent’s arms inside the ring post. We have a Thumb Tack Jones sighting up in here tonight. The Ouchy of the night belonged to Marina when she ate all of those tacks on her feet. Bless the cameraman for getting in close to highlight the pain she was in. Things went from bad to worse for the Deathriders when Stat-Daddy connected a 450 splash. Coffin Drop Jones sealed the deal and the victory!
After the match, Toni Storm came out for a stare-down that escalated to a brawl. Darby whipped Yuta like a mule. Pac evened the odds and choked him with a belt. Mox explained to Darby that he would utter the words, “I Quit,” at WrestleDream. The show ended when Pac delivered a vicious lariat…and Darby lying beaten on the mat.
