Square Enix Director Would Love To Do Final Fantasy VI Remake

...it's gonna happen...we can feel it!

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, Final Fantasy 6, Square Enix

Whether we like it or not, we live in a world where game developers and publishers LOVE to crank out remasters and remakes of classic or cult-classic titles so that fans can bank on the nostalgia or “recreate magic from the past.” When it works well, we’re grateful. When it doesn’t? Then we see it as a cash grab. Square Enix has been doing plenty of remakes recently, including with the original Dragon Quest trilogy, and, of course, the Final Fantasy VII Remake Saga. However, fans have seen what these have done and want a Final Fantasy VI remake to happen sooner rather than later.

Enter the director of said remake saga, Naoki Hamaguchi, who has been talking a lot about the upcoming ports of the first entry to the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox platforms. When asked by Windows Central what game he’d like to remake next, his answer was pretty clear:

“If I had all the time and money in the world, Final Fantasy VI is my favorite mainline title. That would be very cool to take on as a remake. That being said, I’ve put my heart and soul into the Final Fantasy VII Remake series for over a decade now. Working on something completely new would be quite fun as well.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard such a desire from someone in Square Enix to make a remake of the 6th entry. There is a section of fans who feel this is actually the best Final Fantasy game ever made. Many also feel that the HD-2D style would be perfect for the remake. Could it happen soon? Sure! But it’s fair to think that Hamaguchi will be busy for a while before he can set his sights on this particular remake.
