Dragon Quest fans have had a lot to celebrate recently. With the release of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince two years ago and the HD-2D remakes of the original trilogy, Square Enix is putting effort into holding fans over until the eventual release of Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate. But during the latest Nintendo Direct, Square Enix made a surprising announcement by revealing another remake.
It was revealed during the presentation that Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will be making its way to the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 consoles on February 5, 2026. It was also revealed that the Switch edition will be available both physically and digitally, but the Switch 2 edition will be receiving a game key card release instead of a full physical one.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined takes the original PlayStation One game and revamps it with new visuals, an enhanced story, significant changes to the battle system, a ton of Quality-of-Life improvements, and more. The character designs of the original game were designed by legendary artist Akira Toriyama, but the remake opted to transform his designs into a brand-new 3D art style using real life dolls. Fans have begun criticizing the shift from Toriyama’s work following the reveal.
Following the Nintendo presentation, Square Enix made the announcement that the game will also be available on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. Square Enix also announced both a Digital Deluxe Edition and a physical Collectors Edition. The Digital Deluxe Edition includes three DLC packs while the Collectors Edition includes a steelbook case, plush, figure, and more.
The base game is priced at $59.99 while the Collectors Edition will cost $249.99.
