With the return of Acclaim Entertainment, a company that was a big part of my gaming life growing up, comes a surprise I did not see coming. Now reemerging as a retro and indie publisher, Acclaim revealed a game I had not even heard of, and honestly, that is fine. The moment I saw it in action, I knew I wanted to play it. That game is HYPERyuki: Snowboard Syndicate, revealed during the Acclaim showcase.
Watching the trailer instantly reminded me of one series in particular: EA Sports SSX. For those who never played it, SSX was one of the best snowboarding games ever made. It was fast, stylish, addictive, and backed by an incredible soundtrack. It struck the perfect balance of gameplay, pulling off tricks with plenty of attitude, standing tall as one of the greatest sports games of its era.
Sadly, like other legendary sports titles such as NBA Street and NFL Street, the SSX series eventually disappeared. Over the years, there have been attempts to bring that magic back, but none have ever quite hit the mark. That is why I am excited for this indie title that seemingly came out of nowhere but already has my attention.
Give the trailer a watch below and you will see what I mean.
It feels very SSX inspired, and you have to wonder if that is what the developer, Wabisabi Design, Inc, has in mind.
Currently, there is no release date for the game, but we will be keeping a close eye on it. I have my fingers crossed that it is as close as possible to SSX, while still letting Wabisabi Design, Inc create something unique.
You can wishlist the game on Steam right now.
