Looks like the Unreal Engine is the fighting game engine of the current generation

By Keith MitchellDecember 18, 2014

It just struck me that Epic Games game unreal, Unreal Engine 3 & 4, seems to be the engine of choice for fighters as of recent. Don’t believe me? Check this out then. We recently got Guilty Gear Xrd Sign which is running on the Unreal Engine 3 and we also have Mortal Kombat X coming out as well as past Netherrealm titles such as Injustice: Gods Among Us and Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe that use the Unreal Engine 3.

Tekken 7 is also been said to run on Unreal Engine 4, this was said a few months ago. And now we have an official statement from a producer at Capcom, Bochan Kim, who has stated that Street Fighter 5 is in development using the Unreal Engine as well. For those who don’t know, Street Fighter 4 was developed on a custom game engine from Dimps.

Now one might ask why this is and ultmately it comes down to ease. The Unreal Engine scales well and it’s a multiplatform game engine, so porting over a title to multiple systems would be easier vs developing a custom engine that needs to be tweaked and optimized per system. It just makes sense, makes the porting process easier and gets us the games we want into our hands faster.

Just think, a game ungine that was originally made for one of my favorite games (FPS) of all time, Unreal Tournment, is now a game engine that fighters are also using. Now if we could only get an updated King of Fighters on the Unreal Engine. SNK or what’s left of you, are you paying attention?
