Star Fox Needs A Revival, But Who Should Craft It?

By Todd BlackJuly 30, 2025
Star Fox

Timing has a way of bringing forth certain feelings about certain topics. For example, when a video game does well, the reaction from fans can tend to gravitate toward “Why haven’t we seen this franchise do this before?” or “Can they do this but for this character’s series?” Right now, people are still talking about the incredible Donkey Kong Bananza (my review drops tomorrow!), and for good reason. It has single-handedly put DK in a new light and shows what his games could be going forward. So, now, the question is, “When will they do this with Star Fox?”

It’s a question we’ve asked before, including on the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast, where I personally laid out how I would do it to keep the core spacefighting element alive, but add more story, more intense dogfighting (fox-fighting?) battles, and showcase the power of the Switch 2. And earlier today, Insider Stealth posed the same question about whether DK’s newest title could inspire the return of Star Fox:

There's definitely a path for a Star Fox revival with the level of quality that Donkey Kong Bananza received. Star Fox needs to be given to the right team. The 3D Mario team was perfect for Donkey Kong.

He’s not wrong. With the power that the Switch 2 has, and the revivals that have happened over the last several years for Samus Aran and Donkey Kong, and even Pokemon with the Legends spinoffs, there’s no reason they can’t bring Fox McCloud back and give him the game he deserves. So, who should craft his return?

…I don’t know, but that’s part of the fun. Who thought that DK would get a return via the Mario Odyssey team, when Retro Studios did the last two games of his? Who even heard of Mercury Steam before they did Metroid: Samus Returns and Metroid Dread? Perhaps, the best option is to hire a team that wants to see Fox return and will put their all into making the best game possible.

Your move, Nintendo.
