Sony Sues Tencent Over Alleged Plagiarism of the Horizon Series

Sony Sues Tencent Over Alleged Plagiarism of the Horizon Series

Late last year, Polaris Quest, a subsidiary of Tencent Games, announced an open-world action-adventure game called Light of Motiram. The visuals shown from the upcoming title closely resemble those of Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequels, developed by Guerrilla Games.

According to a report by Reuters, this resemblance did not go unnoticed. Sony Interactive has filed a lawsuit against Tencent in a California court, accusing the company of copyright and trademark infringement.

Sony claims that the Chinese tech giant copied its popular Horizon video game series. The upcoming game Light of Motiram is described by Sony as a blatant copy that imitates several distinctive elements of Horizon, potentially misleading consumers.

In its complaint, Sony stated that it had declined Tencent’s proposal last year to collaborate on a new Horizon game. Shortly after, Tencent announced Light of Motiram, which, according to Sony, copies Horizon’s gameplay, story themes, and artistic elements, along with many other similarities.

Sony is seeking an unspecified amount in damages and a court order to stop Tencent from violating its intellectual property rights. Neither Sony nor Tencent has commented publicly on the matter so far.
