The Outer Worlds 2 Price Walked Back Likely Due To Backlash

Just how bad are the pre-orders?

When The Outer Worlds 2 was announced, everyone was pretty happy. Then Obsidian and Xbox mentioned how much the game was going to cost, and that’s when all hell broke loose.

Originally slated to launch at $79.99, The Outer Worlds 2 sparked a wave of frustration among fans and added to the discourse of $80 games being priced too much. Many blamed Microsoft and Xbox, accusing them of price gouging during a time when players are already feeling the pinch of rising game costs.

More than likely, that higher price tag was hurting pre-orders, which may have pushed Obsidian and Xbox to reverse course. Sure, the game is still set to launch on Xbox Game Pass day one, but that also brings up the broader conversation: Is Game Pass truly the industry’s savior people claim it is, or just a temporary band-aid?

In response, the official Outer Worlds Twitter/X account posted a humorous in-universe message to acknowledge the criticism and confirm that the price has been revised:

“Dear Galactic Citizens!
We have received your SOS via skip drone about the pricing. As an organization devoted to making sure that corporations do not go unfettered, we at the Earth Directorate have worked with [REDACTED] to revise the price of The Outer Worlds 2.
While this will not bring peace to the galaxy, or even your local colony, we assure you all that we are here to fight for all colonies in every way that we can.
— From the Office of the Director of the Earth Directorate”

Regardless of the strategy behind it, it’s good to see The Outer Worlds 2 becoming a bit more affordable for those planning to buy it outright.

The Outer Worlds 2 officially launches on October 29th, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
