Shigeru Miyamoto Makes Nintendo’s Stance On Game Development Very Clear

It's about making great games, not great profit.

Shigeru Miyamoto

Earlier today, my team dropped the latest episode of the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast, where we WENT OFF on the recent Xbox layoffs and highlighted how Nintendo continues to do things “the right way” in terms of game development and how they treat their employees. It was a really intense deep dive into what’s happened in recent gaming generations, and to top it all off, a Shigeru Miyamoto quote from a recent Q&A shareholders’ meeting came out that proves what we were talking about even more.

As you’ll see below, Shigeru Miyamoto was asked about what “philosophy” he tries to “impart” on those working on Nintendo’s games, and the answer was both simple and beautiful:

At the recent Nintendo Shareholder Q&A, Miyamoto spoke about the game development philosophy he imparts to Nintendo employees: "We want to release something that we are confident will satisfy our consumers. I always tell our teams to work for the consumer, not for your boss."

That’s a stark difference from how it is at other publishers, including Xbox and Sony, which have been FAR more profit-driven in recent years, with plenty of consequences (and layoffs) to show for it. Meanwhile, Nintendo is dominating with the Switch 2, and people can’t wait to play Donkey Kong Bananza in a few weeks. Thus, their “philosophy” is winning because it’s not one that’s focused solely on money.
