The Super Mario Bros Movie remains one of the biggest shocks in video game and movie history, with the film grossing over a billion dollars at the global box office and becoming one of the highest-grossing animated films ever! As such, Nintendo’s execs, including the one and only Shigeru Miyamoto, were quick to greenlight a sequel, and who can blame them for doing that? Things have been pretty quiet on that front; however, at the recent shareholders meeting, Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri discussed what they were planning for the movie and how to make it as good as the first, if not better.
As noted by GoNintendo, Miyamoto stated that he and Chris know “how the new Super Mario movie will turn out to be an interesting one.”
As for Meledandri, he noted that “we are aiming to create a title that will please our core fans, at the same time, one that will captivate new consumers who have never experienced Super Mario or the world of Nintendo.”
While that may not give us much on what the next Super Mario Bros Movie might be, you can expect that Nintendo will want to do even more work to ensure that things both look great and have a quality story. The first movie did well despite certain flaws (see: Chris Pratt), but it’s the second film that’ll tell if this can be a long-standing animated franchise, or just a one-off success story.
