Review: I’ve found my new gaming mouse – Logitech G502 Proteus Core

I’ve always been a fan of Logitech’s gaming mice line-up, dating back to their MX518, G3, and G500 gaming mice. However, I found myself always going back to the MX518 even though it’s been discontinued for some time as I found that the mouse while being their first attempt at a mouse aimed at a gaming mouse, was also their best effort and was my favorite. This past Black Friday, I found myself roaming the shelves at the local electronic shack, and I happen to notice the Logitech G502 Proteus Core; and I figured what the hell and picked it up, though truly I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this mouse or not.

That is until I got home and hooked it up. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that it looks like a futurist spaceship.

This is perhaps the best mouse I’ve used in quite some time, even surpassing my life long love that was the Logitech MX518 series. It fits into my hand perfectly. The left side of the mouse has a slight edge that gives my thumb a place to rest, instead of touching against my mouse pad, and a rubberized grip on the opposite side where your pinky would rest. I also liked that the mouse comes with a 6FT braided USB cable as it adds strength to the cable and helps protect it from the rare occasion when people (IE: my kids) sit at my desk and start pulling on the mouse. It also adds a nice touch to the overall presentation of the mouse. The Logitech G502 comes with 11 programmable buttons that can be tuned via the software built into the mouse. Isn’t that cool? No more losing your profiles’ software if you wipe your PC or take your mouse elsewhere.

Bonus points to  Logitech for that.

On top of that, the mouse is very cool looking and pleasing to the eye with its all-black design and subtle hints of blue, which is only trumped by the glowing Logitech logo that sits on the palm rest. And for those who don’t like cool glowing lights, you’ll be happy to know that you can turn this off, but why would you? And if the unit is too light for you, you can add weights to it as Logitech has also included a set of 6 that fits inside the mouse’s bottom compartment that sits right over the optical sensor.

Speaking of the optical sensor, this comes with a 12,000 DPI sensor, which is the mouse’s selling point. In conjunction with the sensor and the software, not only can you change the DPI on the fly, but it can also adjust to whatever surface you are using the mouse on; Plastic, Cloth, Wood, or whatever your desk is made of, though if you’re a game, then you already know that a nice cloth mouse pad is all you need but everyone has their preference I suppose. And yes, at 12,000 DPI, it is a bit of an overkill, but it works, and it works well. I noticed that my aim improved in several games; Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Titanfall, and Dragon Age: Inquisition, thanks in part to the enhanced movement, which was very fluid.

What I Didn’t Like:

There really aren’t any cons I have with this mouse. However, I would have liked the mouse wheel to swivel left and right, which would help me lean or peer around walls. That said, there aren’t many if any mice with that feature, and it’s me wishing that someone would eventually add that option. Sadly this mouse appears to be a right-handed only affair, meaning that our fellow southpaws / left-handed PC gamers are left out, and that stinks as this is a wonderful gaming mouse. And if I really wanted to be picky, I could also complain that after looping my mouse from my PC to the top of my desk, I don’t have as much cord left as I’d want, and perhaps maybe an 8FT cord would have been the more optimal choice.

But that’s really trying to nitpick at the mouse, and it’s not really warranted at all. 

The Logitech G502 Proteus can be picked up for $79.99, and while it may seem high priced, it’s definitely a bargain for what you’re getting at the price, especially compared to another mouse with similar features that the G502 includes. I’ll definitely be picking up another when the time comes for a replacement.
