MangaDex, which is the site of one of the internet’s largest scanlation and piracy platforms, has been hit with a number of Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown notices. This will affect over 700 manga series on the website, including The Apothecary Diaries, Dragon Ball, My Dress-Up Darling, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and many others.
MangaDex considers itself a non-profit aggregate site that offers translations of manga, manhwa, and manhua; however, its main feature is uploads of unofficial translations. Because these translations are not affiliated with any official manga publisher, they are considered copyright violations.
This isn’t the first time that MangaDex has faced legal challenges. They were subpoenaed by VIZ Media in 2019, which forced them to change their domain name. The site has still survived in part due to its posting policy, which clearly states that all users must own the material that they are posting and must not infringe on the rights of others. Whether or not that is enough to stave off this latest wave of takedown requests remains to be seen.
