I’m a huge fan of the John Wick franchise. The series may have started out as a “niche action franchise,” but by the time we got to the third and fourth films (which are my favorite of the set), it became the definitive action franchise of the new millennium. Seriously, who does action scenes better than this series? Exactly. When I heard John Wick 5 was happening, I was a little hesitant. The fourth film (as I noted in my review) ended on a high note, and I didn’t feel there was anything else left to be done. Yet, a fifth film is happening, and the franchise’s director has some things to say about it.
In a chat with Empire, Chad Stahelski had this to say on where the story will go:
“The saga of John Wick was pretty wrapped up. So the only way to do a 5 is to have a new story that involves John Wick. It’s not a continuation with the High Table. John dealt with his grief. It will be really different, and everybody [will] see the trailer and go, ‘Holy f*** … I gotta see that.’”
I’ll admit that does have me curious about what John Wick 5 will be like. Stahleski knows what makes this franchise tick, and he wouldn’t continue it like this without knowing a good way forward. We’ll just have to wait and see how it all plays out.
