Top Anime Critics Announce Quest for the Best Podcast Project

By Josh PiedraMay 5, 2025

In his 10th anniversary YouTube video, Geoff Thew (aka Mother’s Basement) revealed his latest project: a podcast collaboration with fellow YouTube personality Tristan Gallant (aka Glass Reflection / Arkada) and anime industry veteran Miles Atherton (White Box Entertainment, previously Anime Ltd & Crunchyroll). In “QUEST FOR THE BEST WITH TRISTAN, MILES, AND GEOFF”, these three friends make public a weekly conversation five years in the making: an endless debate to determine which anime truly are The Best.

Quest for the Best

In each episode, the trio will nominate a contender to dissect and debate, ultimately deciding whether or not it is worthy of being named one of the 100 best anime. The show will highlight hidden gems, resurrect favorites forgotten to time for a new generation of fans, and interrogate if newcomers can stand the test of time. With a vast catalogue to conquer, every episode is an opportunity to find a new favorite.

“What I really wanted when we started was a place to easily talk about ALL anime—not just new releases—with good friends whose opinions I trust! (Even when they are wrong),” says Tristan Gallant, one of the foundational members of Anime YouTube. “With this podcast, we’re able to discuss our favorites without worrying about algorithms.”

Thew echoes Gallant’s sentiments about the difference of a dynamic once in conversation, “I’ll take any excuse to talk about cool anime with cool people, and Miles and Tristan in particular have a way of pushing me to look at things – even my favourite things – from new angles.”

The show will also feature special guest appearances from creators, critics, and industry insiders. For anime fans tired of lukewarm takes and the same old anime rankings, Quest for the Best promises passionate debate, surprising picks, and a healthy dose of chaos.

“We hope you enjoy our show! We started doing it for ourselves by accident during lockdown and are happy we finally can share it with the world,” says Atherton.

The first episode is available now on all of your favorite podcast platforms, as well as YouTube:
