Grand Theft Auto VI Release Pushed to 2026: What This Means for Fans and Developers

Grand Theft Auto VI is officially being pushed back. Rockstar Games has announced that the highly anticipated open-world blockbuster will now release on May 26, 2026, a delay from its assumed Fall 2025 window.

In a statement to fans, Rockstar expressed appreciation for the enthusiasm surrounding the game, while acknowledging the disappointment that may come with the delay.

“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected,” the message reads. “The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.”

Rockstar emphasized its longstanding commitment to quality and stated that Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. “With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

The developer closed the update by promising more information in the near future.

Grand Theft Auto VI is set to be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. As of now, there’s no word on a PC version, although given Rockstar’s history, a PC port could follow at a later date, give or take a few years.

For fans, this announcement helps narrow down the wait. But more importantly, it gives other developers and publishers a clearer lane. GTA VI is expected to dominate attention across the gaming industry, so having a firmer release window allows other games targeting a late 2025 launch to better strategize their release dates in 2025 and 2026.

I’m pretty sure when Rockstar Games posted the news, a sigh of relief was heard… or maybe that was my imagination.
