Canada Joins the U.S. in North America’s Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Order Delay

Last week, Nintendo announced delays for pre-order sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S., citing newly implemented tariffs by President Donald Trump. Now, Canada has joined the U.S. in postponing pre-orders, as reported by the Canadian website MobileSyrup.

Nintendo issued this statement regarding the delay:

Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025 in order to align with the timing of pre-orders to be determined in the U.S.

Like gamers in the U.S., Canadians are now left waiting, with Nintendo unable to provide an update on when pre-orders will resume. While the release date for the console remains unchanged in both regions—for now—there’s growing uncertainty about its future. It does stink that Canadian gamers are being punished due to something that isn’t even the fault of their country.

Adding to these concerns are the rising tariffs, which could drive up the console’s price. Nintendo initially announced prices at $450 without a game and $500 bundled with Mario Kart World. However, with tariffs impacting production in countries like China, Taiwan, and Vietnam, retailers such as Best Buy, Target, and Walmart may pass on these added costs to consumers. While there shouldn’t be a price hike in Canada since it isn’t in a trade war with those mentioned countries,  Still, at this point, it’s anyone’s guess.

However, what needs to be looked at here is that most goods that come into both the U.S. and Canada do so via U.S. ports. This means, if the U.S. is on the receiving end of a reciprocal tariff, there’s a good chance that whoever is picking up the product will get charged more. All we can hope is that I’m wrong and the Switch 2 doesn’t see a price increase in Canada.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to be launched in North America on June 5th, 2025.
