Warner Bros To Shut Down Multiversus and Wonder Woman Studios Alongside San Diego Team

...the pain and irony is rich here.
By Todd BlackFebruary 25, 2025
Multiversus, Wonder Woman

We’ve talked plenty about the state of the gaming industry and how some people don’t give it the proper attention it deserves. Yesterday, the co-heads of DC Studios, which will oversee all media within the DCU movie, TV, and gaming universes, stated that “progress was being made” on the next big gaming titles, though it would be a while until their release. That had gamers excited about what James Gunn and Peter Safran had in store. However, less than 24 hours later, Warner Bros dropped a bombshell and noted that the teams behind Multiversus, the upcoming Wonder Woman game, and the WB San Diego studio would be shut down.

This is devastating on multiple levels, and in an official statement that was posted on Twitter, WB claimed that this was done to help their “strategic” priorities, and was “not indicative” of the teams themselves.

It’s a bad joke (worthy of Joker) that WB is talking about making “good games” and “getting back to profitability again” when it was the higher-ups’ decisions that shot so many games in the foot. Multiversus, for example, was a big hit while in beta, even making plenty of money via starter packs. Then, WB cranked things up monetization wise, made the gameplay unbalanced, and Player First Games had to struggle with fan complaints when the game returned last year. Sure enough, it was shut down, cost WB $100 million dollars, and now Player First games is done.

As for the Wonder Woman title, Monolith Productions were intent on bringing the formula they used in their two Lord of the Rings titles to the game and making it a grand, sweeping adventure. Yet, it was apparently rebooted at one point, and now, the game is canceled. However, on the team’s Discord, certain members promised that the game would be awesome, but they’d never get the chance to show it off:

Our hearts go out to all the devs who lost their jobs, and we hope you all rebound soon. We’d love to say that this will be “the last cuts for a while,” but we all know that’s not a fair thing to say.
