New Thunderbolts* Trailer Highlights the Team’s Human Side

The Avengers Are Not Coming

During Super Bowl 59, Marvel released a new trailer for the upcoming Thunderbolts* movie, set to premiere on May 2, 2025, following Captain America: New World Order.

The trailer highlights the absence of the Avengers, who have disbanded, with many either dead or missing. As the world searches for a new team of heroes, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) argues that the Thunderbolts might be the answer. However, this team is nothing like the Avengers—most of them are just human, as the trailer makes abundantly clear. That said, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, and John Walker do have the super-soldier serum, which certainly counts for something.

Check out the new trailer below.

Thunderbolts* is Marvel Studios’ take on a team of antiheroes and former villains recruited by the government—essentially the MCU’s version of The Suicide Squad. The film features familiar characters, including Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), and their handler, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus).

Oddly, we haven’t seen Robert Reynolds, whose alter ego, the Sentry, is a massively powerful character often compared to Marvel’s Superman. However, the Void—his dark and destructive counterpart—does make an appearance and is the character that’s we don’t get a clear look at.. If that sounds confusing, it is. The Sentry and the Void are deeply intertwined, and I highly recommend looking into their backstory to fully grasp the complexity of their relationship.

Thunderbolts* hits theaters on May 2, 2025.
