Xbox and The Coalition Reveal Gears of War: E-Day During Xbox Games Showcase 2024

Gears of War: E-Day _ Official Announce Trailer

During the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, The Coalition revealed that it is working on the next Gears of War title called Gears of War: E-Day, by showing off a new game trailer

Gears of War: E-Day will serve as a prequel to the Gears of War series, allowing players to step into the shoes of the iconic characters Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as they face Locust Horde invasion for the very first time during the events of Emergence Day, also known as E-Day.

The game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 for the Xbox Series X|S and PC. According to The Coalition’s Creative Director, Matt Searcy, this chapter aims to bring the franchise back to its roots, emphasizing action, suspense, and horror—elements that made the Gears of War series so beloved.

It’s interesting to see Xbox and The Coalition take this route instead of focusing on Gears 6, especially given the narrative corner they painted themselves into with the ending of Gears 5. For those who haven’t played or finished it, the game ends with players facing a choice: to either kill JD Fenix, Marcus Fenix’s son, or Delmont “Del” Walker, JD’s best friend and key ally in Gears 4 and 5. The death of either character has significant consequences, but neither ending has been considered canon.
