Path of Exile 2 Crossplay Shines, but PlayStation Puts Microtransactions in a Box

Path of Exile 2 is now available in early access for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Grinding Gear Games has implemented both crossplay and cross-progression, making it easier for players to enjoy the game across platforms seamlessly. However, there’s a significant limitation when it comes to how microtransactions are handled on PlayStation 5 compared to PC and Xbox Series X|S.

On the PC and Xbox front, microtransaction purchases are shared across platforms. For instance, if you buy a limited-time armor skin on Xbox, it will be available when you log in on PC, and vice versa. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case with PlayStation.

If you make a purchase on PlayStation 5, such as that shiny new armor set, it will remain locked to that platform. When you switch to playing on either PC or Xbox Series X|S, your purchases may appear in your inventory, but they’ll be marked as unavailable. Similarly, any purchases made on PC or Xbox will not carry over to your PlayStation account.

Path of Exile - MTX example

This limitation arises from PlayStation’s policies, which restrict the sharing of microtransaction content across platforms. While Grinding Gear Games has worked to ensure a unified experience elsewhere, this particular issue is beyond their control. For players accustomed to cross-platform freedom, this restriction might feel frustrating—especially considering PlayStation’s motto of being “For the Players.”

I get it. Companies are out to make money, and if someone decides to double-dip on a game such as this, I don’t think it’s right for them to also have to do so with the game’s MTX purchases. They should carry across wherever they go. BUt, sadly, that’s just how it is.

If you plan to invest in cosmetics or other paid content, it’s worth keeping this limitation in mind, especially if you intend to play Path of Exile 2 on multiple platforms.

Despite this drawback, Path of Exile 2 stands out as one of the best action RPGs we’ve played in years, as we’ve stated in our Path of Exile 2  review. While the game is in early access, this is just the beginning, and the game is already showcasing incredible potential—even before reaching its final form.
